US restaurant sales are back to pre-pandemic levels, so why isn’t restaurant employment? – Quartz

As people emerge from lockdowns during the pandemic, they are looking to go out and eat again. Total sales at restaurants and bars hit $67.3 billion in May, surpassing $66.2 billion in February of last year, according to census data analyzed by the National Restaurant Association. (When adjusted for inflation, that number is about 3% below pre-pandemic levels.)

But the leisure and hospitality sector is also facing a worker shortage. In May, 186,000 jobs were created in food services and drinking places, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, which means employment in the sector is still down 12% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Progress for Local Food in the State Houses – Cory’s Digs

This is important information that The Solari Report just published about our local food systems and progress being made in the state legislatures, written by Pete Kennedy. This is so critical to the future of our food security, and people need to continue to push for legislation in their states.

Earth’s energy imbalance removes almost all doubt from human-made climate change – NBC

For decades, Earth’s energy system has been out of whack.

Stability in Earth’s climate hinges on a delicate balance between the amount of energy the planet absorbs from the sun and the amount of energy Earth emits back into space. But that equilibrium has been thrown off in recent years — and the imbalance is growing, according to a paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature Communications.

The changes to Earth’s energy system have major ramifications for the planet’s future climate and humanity’s understanding of climate change. The Princeton University researchers behind the paper found that there’s a less than 1 percent probability that the changes occurred naturally.

Common insecticide is harmful to bees in any amount – Science Daily

The dangers of neonicotinoid insecticides likely can’t be watered down. That’s the conclusion of a new study showing an insecticide made for commercial plant nurseries is harmful to a typical bee even when applied well below the label rate and the plant receives high levels of irrigation.

New report: State of the science on western wildfires, forests and climate change – Phys.org

Exceptionally hot and dry weather this summer has fueled dozens of wildfires across the western U.S., spewing smoke across the country and threatening to register yet another record-breaking year. More than a century of fire exclusion has created dense forests packed with excess trees and brush that ignite and spread fires quickly under increasingly warm and dry conditions.

Scientists largely agree that reducing these fuels is needed to make our forests and surrounding communities more resilient to wildfires and climate change. But policy and action have not kept pace with the problem and suppressing fires is still the norm, even as megafires become more common and destructive.

Seeing the urgent need for change, a team of scientists from leading research universities, conservation organizations and government laboratories across the West has produced a synthesis of the scientific literature that clearly lays out the established science and strength of evidence on climate change, wildfire and forest management for seasonally dry forests. The goal is to give land managers and others across the West access to a unified resource that summarizes the best-available science so they can make decisions about how to manage their landscapes.

Nineteen months after the start of the pandemic, the Chinese government continues to actively thwart a real investigation into the origins of covid-19. Now, a new GOP congressional report alleges that Beijing was covering up the outbreak for months longer than previously assumed.
