Empty shelves in supermarkets as lorry chiefs beg for 100,000 more delivery drivers to ease delays – Daily Mail

Transport bosses yesterday called for the Government to tackle the national truck driver shortage urgently amid fears of more empty supermarket shelves.

The Road Haulage Association said bringing in the Army would not be enough amid claims it had been put on standby to help.

Food supply chains have been placed under intense stress because of a shortage of around 100,000 HGV drivers.

McDonald’s Pressured By Dwlinding Food Bag Supplies – ZeroHedge

The latest supply chain challenge to hit McDonald’s Corp. is the lack of paper bags for food orders. The chain told restaurant owners to limit their bag orders from suppliers as usage is above seasonal trends, according to an internal message from the fast-food company, seen by The Wall Street Journal.

McDonald’s said customers who dine inside are demanding Big Macs, McNuggets, and fries be served in bags rather than trays which have compounded the tightness of the paper bag supplies.

UN climate report is a ‘code red for humanity’ – PRI

The planet is becoming increasingly hot, with human activity changing the climate in unprecedented ways, a new scientific report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says, calling the situation a “code red for humanity.” The landmark report released on Monday, which is the first major review of the science of climate change since 2013, offered its most dire warnings yet: more extreme heat waves, droughts and flooding, with some changes now irreversible. “It’s just guaranteed that it’s going to get worse,” said report co-author Linda Mearns. But the report also suggested that catastrophe could be avoided if the world collectively acts fast.

The world is nowhere near the end of the Covid pandemic, says famed epidemiologist Larry Brilliant – CNBC

The pandemic is not coming to an end soon — given that only a small proportion of the world population has been vaccinated against Covid-19, a well-known epidemiologist told CNBC.

Dr. Larry Brilliant, an epidemiologist who was part of the World Health Organization’s team that helped eradicate smallpox, said the delta variant of the coronavirus is “maybe the most contagious virus” ever.

Vaccination Status Has Americans Picking Sides – WSJ

Weeks of rising Covid-19 cases have hardened divisions within families, communities and friend groups over which members have been vaccinated and which have chosen not to do so.

Hannah Lindeborg wanted to pull out all the stops for her daughter’s second birthday in July, especially after the pandemic derailed the family celebration for her first last year.

The second birthday would be the first big gathering with extended family since Covid-19 came into their lives, Ms. Lindeborg said, adding that she looked forward to hosting everybody over at her home in St. Paul, Minn.

When she learned some of her family members had chosen not to get vaccinated, “it was just kind of downhill from there,” she said.
