The Kim Foxx Effect: How Prosecutions Have Changed in Cook County (tmn)

Further analysis shows that Foxx’s office is exercising discretion in the way it handles drug cases too, which skip the felony review process and go directly to courts. We estimate that Cook County prosecutors have dismissed an additional 2,300 drug cases that, under Alvarez, would have otherwise gone to trial—or ended in a plea. The defendants in some of these cases instead have been diverted to treatment and counseling that led to their charges being dropped.

Federal Court Rules Suspicionless Searches Of Travelers’ Phones And Laptops Unconstitutional (Jen H.)

International travelers returning to the United States have reported numerous cases of improper searches in recent months. A border officer searched plaintiff Zainab Merchant’s phone, despite her informing the officer that it contained privileged attorney-client communications. An immigration officer at Boston Logan Airport reportedly searched an incoming Harvard freshman’s cell phone and laptop, reprimanded the student for friends’ social media postings expressing views critical of the U.S. government, and denied the student entry into the country following the search.

Golden 1 Credit Union gives $20 million in ‘surprise deposits’ to its members (Sparky1)

“Golden 1 Credit Union has been a member-focused organization since day one, and we have an unwavering commitment to invest in those who invest in us,” Donna Bland, president and CEO of Golden 1, said in a statement. “Our members are key to our success, and we are excited to say ‘thank you’ in a very real and tangible way.”

Woman Desperately Chugging Coffee Becomes Impeachment Hearing Hero (Thomas R.)

Explaining that she’s got a 19-month-old at home who woke up a little before 6, she added, “I’m just a tired workin’ mom trying to do it all.”

This is not the first incident of beverage-related impeachment humor: State Department official George Kent’s giant Nalgene water bottle stole the show at the first public impeachment hearing last week.

Watch Bees Surf to Safety on Waves They Create (jdargis)

As with many scientific advances — Isaac Newton’s apple or Benjamin Franklin’s lightning bolt — Dr. Roh’s experiment began with a walk. Passing Caltech’s Millikan Pond in 2016, he observed a bee on the water’s surface generating waves. He wondered how an insect known for flight could propel through water.

The Secret to Enjoying a Long Winter (jdargis)

The people in the Norwegian communities Leibowitz studied, they got outside as much as they could — “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing” — spent their time indoors being cozy, came together in groups, and marveled at winter’s beauty. I’d tried all that stuff my previous two winters but what seems to have moved the needle for me this year is a shift in mindset.

3 nutritionists (who are also moms) share how they get their teens to eat healthier (Thomas R.)

“If you become overly involved, it’s likely to backfire,” Ansel says. She’s found that teens tend to do better when they hear information about eating well from someone outside the family. “When my kids went to the doctor, they tended to latch onto that information more than when I said it,” she says. “When I said it, there was a lot of eye-rolling.”

New Arizona Development Bans Residents From Bringing Cars (tmn)

The 1,000-person rental community, which broke ground this month in Tempe, won’t allow residents to park cars on site or in the surrounding area as a term of their leases. The founders say it will be the first of its kind in the U.S.

Scientists Uncovered 143 More Huge Ancient Drawings In Peru (RS)

These efforts led to the detection of the new figures, which range from roughly five to 100 meters in length. Much like the known Nazca drawings, the geoglyphs discovered by Sakai’s team depict a wide range of living things and objects, including people, birds, monkeys, fish, reptiles, and more abstract designs. The drawings were made by the ancient culture by removing the rocky black topsoil, which revealed light-colored sand underneath.

Irwin Family Opens Elephant Hospital Fulfilling One of Steve’s Dreams (Jen H.)

Bindi Irwin tells Buzzfeed News, “I think for us as a family we always want to make sure that his legacy continues. Because Dad always said, ‘I don’t care if people remember me, I care if people remember my message.’” Though his family has always been happy to act in Steve’s name, their own contributions cannot be understated. Terri being a conservationist her whole life, even starting a rehabilitation center for injured predator mammals at just age 22. She and Steve raised their children with the same passion and care for wildlife they both shared. Thanks to the efforts of the entire Irwin family, it’s safe to say neither Steve, nor his message, will be soon forgotten.

How a Guatemalan Town Tackled Its Plastic Problem (Jen H.)

Before 2016, San Pedro La Laguna was drowning in plastic pollution that was threatening the fragile ecosystem of Lake Atitlán. The dire need for change crystallized when a solid waste disposal processing plant that was expected to manage a decade of waste was halfway full within six months, mostly with single-use plastics. Rather than build a larger plant—which would’ve been an enormous financial burden on the town and further polluted the lake with debris—Mayor Mauricio Méndez decided to implement a stringent municipal law to encourage lasting, sustainable change.
