The Quality Of Life In The United States Is Going Down The Toilet

Is the quality of life in America getting better, or is it getting worse?  Americans certainly have a lot more “money” than they did when I was a kid, but that doesn’t mean much because the U.S. dollar has only a fraction of the value that it did back then.  And without a doubt our electronic devices have become much more advanced, but that doesn’t mean that we are happier.  In fact, everywhere I look people seem to be deeply unhappy.

Reddit chief: I was late to spot GameStop stock mania

Reddit boss Steve Huffman has told BBC News he supported the aims of controversial sub-Reddit WallStreetBets.

A long-time fan of the group, he said he had been slow in spotting its effect on GameStop’s huge share-price spike in January. “I was actually a little late to the party, because I didn’t realise that Reddit had leaked into the real world again”, he said.

Stocks & Bonds Hammered As Hindenburg Omen Strikes

Amid the chaotic swings of the last few days, a “Hindenburg Omen” has been triggered in the Nasdaq for the first time since the pre-COVID peak.

While there are slightly different constructions of it, and there is disagreement on what thresholds should be used to trigger an alert, Refinitiv notes that a more stringent construction of the indicator shows a signal popped up Tuesday on the Nasdaq. The last signal developed 12 trading days ahead of the Nasdaq’s Feb. 19, 2020 top and what would then prove to be a 33% swoon in the tech-laden index into its March trough.

How Gold & Silver Will Someday Make a Vacation Home Very Affordable

It’s one of our most popular articles: how much gold and silver will I need to buy a vacation home?

We last looked at these ratios in the summer of 2019, so time for an update.

As you know, gold and silver prices are higher than they were 18 months ago—but so are real estate prices. Partly due to a shift in geographical trends from the pandemic, but mostly a result of extremely low interest rates. Mortgage rates in the US hit an all-time historic low in December, making it easier than ever to finance a home.

The Movie Industry Holds Its Breath As New York Reopens Theaters

Movie theaters in Chicago, Houston, Phoenix and Philadelphia have been open for months. But attendance remains low, not just because of public safety concerns—but because there isn’t much to see. Major studios are delaying their blockbusters, or releasing them straight to streaming.

One big reason? The two biggest movie markets in the country, New York City and Los Angeles, remain closed.

Texas’ oldest, largest power cooperative files for bankruptcy after $2.1B ERCOT bill for winter storm

The largest and oldest electric power cooperative in Texas, Brazos Electric, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The utility company, which serves 16 distribution member co-ops that cater to more than 1.5 million Texans, said it had “no choice” but to file for bankruptcy after accumulating more than $2.1 billion in bills stemming from the Lone Star state’s winter storm last month.

How The White House Got 2 Pharma Rivals To Work Together On COVID-19 Vaccine

President Biden said on Tuesday that a key milestone in the fight against COVID-19 could be reached two months faster than earlier projected. By the end of May, there should be enough vaccine doses for every adult in America, he said — a dramatic improvement to his initial timetable for late July.

A turning point in speeding up that pledge came a few weeks ago, on a Sunday afternoon in early February, during a phone call with Johnson & Johnson executives that had been planned for 15 minutes but stretched for longer than an hour, two senior administration officials told NPR.

How to grow food in a concrete jungle

Urban farms like Agricool are part of a broad collection of metropolitan agricultural efforts including everything from vertical farms to greenhouses to aquaponics to community gardens. The idea of cultivating food in or near cities is not new (see the victory gardens of both world wars, for example), but these ventures have become increasingly popular in recent years as the local food movement strengthens. After the rise of the supermarkets led many people to feel disconnected from food production, consumers are again paying more attention to how and where their food is grown, along with how far ingredients must travel between field and plate.
