How Pandemics Wreak Havoc—and Open Minds (jdargis)
Pomata told me, “What happens after the Black Death, it’s like a wind—fresh air coming in, the fresh air of common sense.” The intellectual overthrow of the scholastic-medicine establishment in the Middle Ages was caused by doctors who set aside the classical texts and gradually turned to empirical evidence. It was a revival of medical science, which had been dismissed after the fall of ancient Rome, a thousand years earlier. “After the Black Death, nothing was the same,” Pomata said. “What I expect now is something as dramatic is going to happen, not so much in medicine but in economy and culture. Because of danger, there’s this wonderful human response, which is to think in a new way.”
Coronavirus: Another chance to transform the global food trade (westcoastjan)
Fakhri suggests that the right to food can be used as a tool for civil society to engage with trade institutions internationally.
Indeed, transforming trade so that it complements rather than displaces localized food systems is the key to recognizing and honouring the right to food for people all over the world.
Amid the Coronavirus Crisis, a Regimen for Reëntry (RS)
covid-19 isn’t actually crazy infectious. Measles is crazy infectious: for instance, in a 2008 outbreak in San Diego that began in a school where thirty per cent of students were unvaccinated, each infected child spread the virus to, on average, eighteen others—meaning that the disease has a “reproductive ratio,” or R0, of eighteen. By comparison, a person with covid-19 will infect, on average, only two to three others out of all the people he or she encounters while going about ordinary life. Exposure time matters: we don’t know exactly how long is too long, but less than fifteen minutes spent in the company of an infected person makes spread unlikely.
Study finds fenofibrate may downgrade Covid-19 to common cold level (Joy T.)
According to the research, the virus leads to deposits of lipids in the lungs. Nahmias partnered with Mount Sinai Medical Center researcher Dr Benjamin tenOever to gain better insights into SARS-CoV-2 mechanism of attack on the human body.
The researchers observed that the virus changes lipid metabolism in human lungs. They believe that halting this process could help prevent the onset of problems that increase the severity of the disease.
Video of 94-year-old great-grandpa flying down a waterslide goes viral (Sparky1)
“I actually posted it out there thinking that the whole family would all see the video and be excited about watching him go down,” Graham explained to TODAY. “I figured it would get a few hundred views. But when it hit a million, I called them up and said ‘Well, you got a million views’ and he said ‘Why in the world would a million people want to watch me going down a slide?’”
“HCD is thrilled to administer this historical program to help the most vulnerable amongst us, while also protecting the public health of all,” said HCD Director Gustavo Velasquez. “HCD is putting forth dedicated resources to ensure cities and counties receive the assistance they need and these funds are distributed quickly so those most in need are served as soon as possible.”
A Kentucky tattoo shop is offering to cover up hate and gang symbols for free (Jen H.)
“One of the people we got was a man with both of his forearms completely covered in hate symbols, absolutely everywhere. How is this man going to interact with society with the mistakes he made 10, 15, 20 years ago?” King said.
“We also got a guy with a giant swastika who said he has never taken his shirt off in front of his kids. I like seeing that. I like seeing people want to change themselves for the better. That swells me full of emotions.”
Gigantic Atlantic Coast Gas Pipeline Done In By Humble Household Heat Pump (Bill M.)
All of this renewable energy activity is so exciting, but when it comes to heating peoples’ homes it is hard to beat fossil gas. Kidding! In many countries around the world, electric heat pumps are the heating technology of choice, and the trend is finally catching on in the US.
VIDEO: 64K endangered turtles spotted on the edge of Great Barrier Reef (Jen H.)
The images in the video above were captured by drones which scientists have been using to track those endangered populations.
Research teams found drones give more accurate information than other practices used to study the turtles.
Incredible condor soared for 100 miles without flapping its wings (RS)
The scientists took a deep look at the connection between environmental conditions and the amount of effort large birds put into their flights. To do this, they attached data recorders to Andean condors that allowed them to log every single flap of the wings as well as the birds’ flight paths.
