Chinese Suppliers to Apple, Nike Shun Xinjiang Workers as U.S. Forced-Labor Ban Looms – Wall Street Journal
Chinese factories that supply Apple Inc. and Nike Inc. and make other products sold in the U.S. are shunning workers from Xinjiang, as Western countries increase scrutiny of forced labor from the remote northwestern region where Beijing has been accused of committing genocide against local ethnic minorities.
Lens Technology Co. Ltd, a Chinese maker of smartphone touch screens and supplier to Apple and other companies, phased out Uyghur factory workers transferred from Xinjiang through a state-backed labor program last year, according to former staff and shop owners near one of its factories. The company has also ceased hiring Uyghur workers, according to current staff.
JP Morgan: US banking giant gives boss ‘special award’ – BBC
Banking giant JP Morgan Chase gave its chief executive a “special award”, potentially worth millions of dollars. The company said the award was to persuade Jamie Dimon to lead it for a “significant number of years” more. The 1.5 million stock appreciation rights, which are like options, will allow him to take a profit if the firm’s share price rises. Mr Dimon is the only sitting boss of a major Wall Street bank who saw it through the 2008 financial crisis.

Wildfires in the American West, including one burning in Oregon that’s currently the largest in the U.S., are creating hazy skies as far away as New York as the massive infernos spew smoke and ash into the air in columns up to six miles high. Skies over New York City were hazy Tuesday as strong winds blew smoke east from California, Oregon, Montana and other states. Oregon’s Bootleg Fire grew to 606 square miles (1,569 square kilometers) — half the size of Rhode Island.
Climate change: US pushes China to make faster carbon cuts – BBC
US climate envoy John Kerry has called on China to increase the speed and depth of its efforts to cut carbon. Without sufficient emissions reductions by China, Mr Kerry said, the global goal of keeping temperatures under 1.5C was “essentially impossible”. Mr Kerry said he was convinced that China could do more and the US was willing to work closely to secure a reasonable climate future.

France forced to soften rules after coronavirus green pass backlash – Politico
The COVID green pass — a digital or paper certificate that contains proof of vaccination or of immunity — is scheduled to come into effect next month. Wednesday is seen as a test day for the pass that will be introduced in museums, galleries and cinemas for events exceeding 50 people.
But barely a week after it was announced the scheme is already coming under significant strain. More than 100,000 people, many of them waving anti-vaccination placards, took to the streets to protest against the pass on Sunday, raising fears the pass will become a symbol for dissatisfaction against Macron.
On Monday, the government made several concessions, including lowering fines for noncompliance, pushing back deadlines and changing the rules for shopping centers. The government faces more hurdles ahead as the bill introducing the new measures went to parliament Tuesday. A group of senators has already indicated they will refer the bill to France’s Constitutional Council.

About 100 fully vaccinated crewmembers onboard the Royal Navy’s HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier have been infected with COVID-19 as they make their way through a 28-week global deployment tour. The BBC reported the aircraft carrier is leading the Carrier Strike Group that has several other warships accompanying it. The 100 cases of COVID-19 are being managed on the ship, with other ships in the fleet also affected by the virus, the BBC was told.

Data released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) included 463,457 reports of injuries and deaths, across all age groups, following COVID vaccines — an increase of more than 25,000 compared with the previous week.
The data comes directly from reports submitted to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), the primary government-funded system for reporting adverse vaccine reactions in the U.S.
