Power of positivity: Health benefits of multivitamins ‘may all be in the mind’. (LesPhelps)

BOSTON — The health benefits of taking multivitamin supplements may be all in the mind, according to a new study. People’s positive expectations could be behind the benefits of multivitamin and mineral tablets as there is no hard evidence otherwise, researchers suggest.

A number of clinical trials have “failed” to find any measurable health benefits from taking vitamin or mineral supplements. That led Harvard University’s Dr. Manish Paranjpe to examine whether the subconscious is behind health improvements among those taking the popular supplements.

Biden Rural Advisor Lays Out Campaign’s “Aggressive” Agricultural Priorities (newsbuoy)

Former U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), who is acting as a rural adviser to former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, recently said in an interview with the Mid-West Farm Report that there are a few agricultural priorities a Biden administration would focus on.

Senator Hietkamp says one of the biggest priorities for the Biden campaign has to do with the biofuels industry. “I think the first thing that we absolutely have to do is to get back to honoring and appreciating that you have to have compliance on the Renewable Fuel Standard,” she says.

Deutsche Bank Proposes A 5% “Work From Home” Privilege Tax (ddelong)

At a time when the Fed is already monetizing the entire US budget deficit thanks to helicopter money, sparking conversations about the utility of taxation, and when a Biden administration is set to at least try and roll back most of the Trump tax cuts, the last thing the population wants to hear about is even more taxes.

Yet in a “modest proposal” from Deutsche Bank, the bank argues that in a time of pervasive covid shutdowns, “those who can work from home (WFH) receive direct and indirect financial benefits and they should be taxed in order to smooth the transition process for those who have been suddenly displaced.”

Biden could alter Big Tech’s Section 230 protections, reinstate ‘net neutrality’

The list of challenges facing President-elect Joe Biden on Day One includes addressing concerns about Big Tech that have seen a crescendo, as massive firms that profit from user data wield increasing power over how Americans communicate with each other.

While President Trump and Republican lawmakers have criticized tech and social platforms for what they consider censorship of conservative views, Democrats argue that the platforms are failing to adequately police hate speech and violent content.

Costco updates mask policy, requires members with medical conditions to wear face shields (jw)

Costco is changing its in-store face mask policy to accommodate customers with medical conditions.

The retailer’s updated policy requires any individual who is unable to wear a face mask, including those who have a medical condition, to wear a face shield to enter any of its stores. The policy goes into effect on Nov. 16.

Trump to Rush Drilling Leases in Arctic Before Biden Takes Over

The Trump administration is advancing plans to auction drilling rights in the U.S. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge before the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, who has vowed to block oil exploration in the rugged Alaska wilderness.

The Interior Department is set to issue a formal “call for nominations” as soon as Monday, kick-starting a final effort to get input on what tracts to auction inside the refuge’s 1.56-million-acre coastal plain. The plans were described by two people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named detailing administration strategy.

Norway’s Wealth Tax Is Uncommon. Here’s What America Could Learn From It. (jw)

Norwegian entrepreneur Karl Alveng Munthe-Kaas will face a hefty tax bill when the grocery company he co-founded in 2013 goes public. But the 37-year-old isn’t bitter; he welcomes it.

For Munthe-Kaas, a system that raises revenue by targeting those with the greatest capacity to pay makes sense. “I think it’s a simple, and also fair, principle,” said Munthe-Kaas. No one in Norway would have become very wealthy, he said, “if it hadn’t been for the public services the government provides.”
