‘The impossible has already happened’: what coronavirus can teach us about hope (jdargis)
I often think of these times as akin to a spring thaw: it’s as if the pack ice has broken up, the water starts flowing again and boats can move through places they could not during winter. The ice was the arrangement of power relations that we call the status quo – it seems to be stable, and those who benefit from it often insist that it’s unchangeable. Then it changes fast and dramatically, and that can be exhilarating, terrifying, or both.
How New Mexico Is Beating the Virus (tmn)
When Covid-19 attacked, Ms. Lujan Grisham sprang into action. She declared a statewide health emergency on March 11, when just four people in her state had tested positive — and two days before the president.
In the background, the state was already moving. One of the state’s most valuable assets is Lovelace Health Systems, one of the state’s three biggest hospital networks. Modeled on the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Lovelace became famous for administering the physicals that narrowed the field of the original Mercury astronauts. Veteran physicians had already endured the 1993 outbreak of Hantavirus, a deadly, aerosolized respiratory virus spread by deer mice. Lovelace drilled extensively for the Ebola outbreak in 2014.
The Pandemic Shows What Cars Have Done to Cities (JK)
The current crisis gives us the impetus to rethink and recalibrate, at least temporarily, the allocation of urban space. Cities including Oakland and Berlin are redrawing lines, or reclassifying through streets as public spaces. One of the most ambitious plans, Milan’s Strade Aperte (“Open Roads”), brings wider sidewalks, temporary cycling lanes, and lower speed limits to some 22 miles of city streets. The region around Paris has gone even further, announcing plans for a 650-kilometer bike network. When successful, interventions that take space back from cars have a habit of sticking.
“We cannot live in isolation forever,” he said in a press release. “Regular exercise has far more health benefits than we know. The protection against this severe respiratory disease condition is just one of the many examples.”
COYOTE V. ACME (JK)
Mr. Coyote states that on December 13th he received of Defendant via parcel post one Acme Rocket Sled. The intention of Mr. Coyote was to use the Rocket Sled to aid him in pursuit of his prey. Upon receipt of the Rocket Sled Mr. Coyote removed it from its wooden shipping crate and, sighting his prey in the distance, activated the ignition. As Mr. Coyote gripped the handlebars, the Rocket Sled accelerated with such sudden and precipitate force as to stretch Mr. Coyote’s forelimbs to a length of fifty feet.
Stroll through the Japanese Garden in Bloom (JK)
The historic garden is one of the oldest extant Japanese gardens in the United States, and its collection of cherry cultivars was in lovely bloom during filming. Petry, a specialist in moving camera techniques, conceived the piece as a way to recreate the meditative experience of walking through the garden on a glorious, early spring day.
“Glowing” Dolphins Swimming in Bioluminescent Waters (jdargis)
Conditions have to be absolutely perfect for the bioluminescence to show up and to have an animal swim through it so we can film it. On top of all that just trying to nail the focus at such a wide aperture with something moving in the water was a nightmare. We were out for a few hours and on our final stretch back we finally had 2 Dolphins pop up to start the incredible glowing show. A few minutes later and we were greeted by a few more which was insane.
Scythe Beats a Weed Whacker in Grass Cutting Race (RS)
A man cutting grass with a scythe totally blows away a man operating a weed whacker in a grass cutting competition at the West Country Scythe Festival in Somerset, England.
