Recession Early Warning? Spending By the Wealthy Is Slowing

America’s economy is built on consumption. Average Americans have been pushing the US economy along, spending money they don’t have. But as we’ve reported, there are signals that the credit cards might be close to maxed out. Now there appears to be another warning sign – the wealthy are reining in their spending. In August, […]

Poland Brings Gold Home; Calls It a Symbol of Strength

Poland has repatriated 100 tons of gold from England. National Bank of Poland Governor Adam Glapiński announced the yellow metal’s return home on Monday. “The gold symbolizes the strength of the country,” Glapiński told reporters. He noted that the country could generate multi-million dollar profits if it sold its gold reserves, although there are no […]

Epic Fail

The US Federal Reserve currently believes they are doing "good" by preventing downturns and sending asset prices higher. But in reality, they're setting the stage for a very disappointing future. Perhaps even a violent one.

Daily Digest 11/25 – Affordable Housing Separated By Design, Minimum Wage Doesn’t Cover Rent Anywhere In U.S.

Economy

The $4 trillion force propelling US stocks to record highs (Sparky1)

Despite the similarities to quantitative easing, the Fed has stressed its current actions are not a return of that 2008 crisis-era bond-buying program, which was aimed at stimulating the economy and boosting markets. The Fed says what it’s doing now is purely a technical fix.

The fix has worked: Borrowing costs in this critical corner of Wall Street are now back in line.

U.S. Resumes Large-Scale Operations Against ISIS in Northern Syria (jdargis)

The resumption of extensive counterterrorism operations capped a tumultuous two months in which many of the nearly 1,000 American troops in northeastern Syria flew or drove out of the country under Mr. Trump’s withdrawal order. Separately, several hundred other troops, some with armored Bradley fighting vehicles, arrived from Iraq and Kuwait under a subsequent order from Mr. Trump to protect Syria’s eastern oil fields from ISIS, as well as from the Syrian government and its Russian partners.

The world’s best pension system is being pushed to the brink (Sparky1)

For global pension funds, low interest rates couldn’t have come at a worse time. Returns on their investments are poised to drop just as a seismic demographic shift takes hold. People are living longer, and populations are aging, which means there are fewer younger workers to pay into the system, keeping it afloat.

Minimum wage doesn’t cover the rent anywhere in the U.S. (KT)

Even the $15 hourly wage touted by labor activists would not be enough to make housing affordable in the overwhelming majority of states, the coalition found. Nationally, someone would need to make $17.90 an hour to rent a modest one-bedroom or $22.10 an hour to cover a two-bedroom place.

Frontline Thoughts: Muddling For Solutions (hail)

Back then, a huge part of the working-age population couldn’t find jobs because there were none to find. Now, the unemployment rate is at record lows. Yet the level of unhappiness is not all that different. Why? How can people have jobs and still be so dissatisfied?

Employment is not a binary condition. Jobs vary qualitatively: wages, benefits, working conditions, security, and more. Further, current conditions include assumptions from the past.

Separated by Design: Why Affordable Housing Is Built in Areas With High Crime, Few Jobs and Struggling Schools (tmn)

Since the mid-1980s, almost $2.2 billion in low-income housing tax credits have been awarded to construct 27,000 affordable housing units in the state. Just 10% were built in prosperous towns, an investigation by The Connecticut Mirror and ProPublica has found. About 80% were located in struggling communities, literally erecting pockets of poverty. The rest fall somewhere in between.

Exclusive: Humans placed in suspended animation for the first time (newsbuoy)

At normal body temperature – about 37°C – our cells need a constant supply of oxygen to produce energy. When our heart stops beating, blood no longer carries oxygen to cells. Without oxygen, our brain can only survive for about 5 minutes before irreversible damage occurs. However, lowering the temperature of the body and brain slows or stops all the chemical reactions in our cells, which need less oxygen as a consequence.

In Virginia, and elsewhere, gun supporters prepare to defy new laws (Thomas R.)

A resistance movement is boiling up in Virginia, where Democrats rode a platform on gun control to historic victories in state elections earlier this month. The uprising is fueled by a deep cultural gulf between rural red areas that had long wielded power in Virginia and the urban and suburban communities that now dominate. Guns are the focus. Behind that, there is a sense that a way of life is being cast aside.

The Costly, Life-Disrupting Consequences of Poor Diabetes Care (jdargis)

Each of the three diabetes experts I spoke with mentioned insurance problems as a major hindrance for many patients who need to keep their diabetes under control. It is the rare policy that covers consultations for diet and exercise, which can reduce the need for medications and require more time than the 15 or 20 minutes allotted to a doctor visit. But even needed medications are often out of reach financially.

82 Days Underwater: The Tide Is High, but They’re Holding On (jdargis)

This year, Hurricane Dorian and other tropical storms in late August and September likely interrupted the Gulf Stream, which moves water away from southern Florida. Instead, the water backed up, said Chris Rothwell, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in Key West. Tides from the Carolinas to Florida, and from the Florida Keys to Tampa, have been six to 18 inches higher than expected.

Lies, damn lies and climate statistics (Afridev)

It will come as no surprise that a recent poll indicated that economists are among the least-trusted professionals. They’ve made blundering mistakes on everything from claiming financial crises can happen to not facing the most obvious recessions.

But all that pales into insignificance when inept economists get involved in modeling climate science. A recession we can recover from, but the breakdown of our planet, we cannot.

Rethinking the Dollar with Mike Manwell

from Financial Survival Network

Mike Manwell was a professional athlete and experienced who traveled the world widely, often using other country’s currencies. That got him thinking about the US Dollar and about money. As Mike said people just take money for granted, especially the millennial generation. Mike originally targeted his show and site towards these millennials, but lately has realized that Boomers are at risk and need the information he conveys, now more than ever. The reboot of the monetary system is currently underway and has been an ongoing trend since the dot com bust of the early 2000’s.

Digital Economics Strikes the Home and the Office with Naresh Vissa

from Financial Survival Network

The digital economy went bust in 2001. Companies started seeking better more cost-effective ways of doing business. Now you can outsource everything, services and manufacturing, etc. It’s more efficient and improves the bottom line. When the next recession hits, it will be the next transformation of the global economy. Naresh is seeing it with his own business, his services have displaced employees and has increased client capabilities. The need to attend trade shows is diminishing. Their cost is making companies seek other web-based solutions. Online events and summits are becoming dominant. You’re no longer limited by space and geography.

Which countries produce most of the world’s gold? Gold mine output has flatlined over the last several years and that trend appears to be continuing in 2019. Sacramento sheriff attacks McClatchy, as company’s pension and debt burdens pile up (Sparky1)

It said last week that it has begun talks with its largest debt holder, New Jersey hedge fund Chatham Asset Management, about restructuring more than half of the publisher’s daunting debt load. Separately, it has approached the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. about taking over its pension plan — a move that, if successful, would alleviate the need to contribute $124 million into the plan next year.

Schwab Nears Deal to Buy TD Ameritrade (newsbuoy)

Charles Schwab Corp. is nearing a deal to buy TD Ameritrade Holding Corp, according to a person familiar with the matter, reshaping a beleaguered online brokerage sector that’s seen fierce competition from new entrants amid price pressure and alternative ways to invest for clients. Bloomberg’s Annie Massa reports on “Bloomberg Markets.”

The Collapse of Civilization May Have Already Begun (belmontl)

Yet this is not just a scientific debate. It also raises difficult moral questions about what kind of action is warranted to prepare for, or attempt to avoid, the worst. Scientists may disagree about the timeline of collapse, but many argue that this is entirely beside the point. While scientists and politicians quibble over timelines and half measures, or how bad it’ll all be, we are losing precious time. With the stakes being total collapse, some scientists are increasingly arguing that we should fundamentally change the structure of society just to be safe.

Trump said Hong Kong would be ‘obliterated’ without him (Sparky1)

The comment comes as U.S. trade talks with China have yet again hit a snag, despite indications that a limited deal was close to being signed. The protests roiling Hong Kong are also emerging as a potential source of friction. Congress recently approved legislation that could remove Hong Kong’s special trade status if Beijing encroaches too much on the territory’s semi-autonomous status.

Over 80% of adolescents worldwide don’t get enough exercise, putting health at risk: Study (Adam)

“The trend of girls being less active than boys is concerning,” study co-author Dr Leanne Riley, of the WHO, said in a statement Friday. “More opportunities to meet the needs and interests of girls are needed to attract and sustain their participation in physical activity through adolescence and into adulthood.”

Most countries in the study — 73% — saw this gender gap widen between 2001 and 2016.

150 years of bank credit expansion is near its end (thc0655)

While an individual bank could expand its balance sheet, the implications of all banks doing the same may have escaped the early banking pioneers operating under the 1844 act. Thus, when their balance sheets expanded to a multiple of the bank’s own capital, there was little cause for concern. After all, so long as a bank paid attention to its reputation it would always have access to the informal interbank market. And so long as it can call in its loans at short notice, the duration mismatch between funding by cash deposits and its loan book would be minimised.

OK Boomer, Who’s Going to Buy Your 21 Million Homes? (Adam)

SUN CITY, Ariz.—When this Phoenix suburb opened on January 1, 1960, it was billed as the original retirement community. From above, it would look like a UFO landing site, laid out in rings to mimic halos surrounding the sun. Just past the entrance, a billboard flanked by rows of palm trees promised “An Active New Way Of Life.”

Charges of Ukrainian Meddling? A Russian Operation, U.S. Intelligence Says (tmn)

The revelations demonstrate Russia’s persistence in trying to sow discord among its adversaries — and show that the Kremlin apparently succeeded, as unfounded claims about Ukrainian interference seeped into Republican talking points. American intelligence agencies believe Moscow is likely to redouble its efforts as the 2020 presidential campaign intensifies. The classified briefing for senators also focused on Russia’s evolving influence tactics, including its growing ability to better disguise operations.

LA Has More Vacant Homes Than Homeless People, Report Finds (tmn)

Vacancy rates in the 10 buildings have dropped to 30% since the study was carried out, according to data supplied by CoStar to LAist. In hard numbers, that means 1,544 of 2,809 vacant units in those 10 buildings were filled between April and November.

Still, the vacancy rate in the studied buildings is well above the overall housing vacancy rate, 6.4%, for the city of Los Angeles, according to the most recent American Community Survey data (2017).

The BadDaddy Manifesto (Phil D.)

Next came 9/11. My childhood home sat 25 miles across Long Island Sound from the World Trade Center. On a clear day, you could see the twin towers from my bedroom.

Now 23 and relocated, I couldn’t see the towers anymore, but the place – New York City – was always close to home. Like you, I watched in horror on live TV as the second plane hit 2 WTC.

The Z Man: Another Trip Around The Sun (thc0655)

In this regard, the health care system is a glimpse into the future our rulers have planned for us. To the people in the health care system, I am just a talking meat stick, one of many, they have to supervise. The relationship between the patient and the system is impersonal and transactional. Health care is a process. The patients enter the system, pass through the system and come out the other end repaired, broken in some new way or dead. No one really cares, just as long as the process continues.

Billionaire Fracking Brothers Hammered by Permian Holdings (newsbuoy)

Eight of the 10 biggest holdings in a portfolio spanning more than 50 investments have dropped since June 2018, when they were worth almost $1 billion. In a filing last week, they reported stakes in just seven entities worth a total of only $35.7 million. The combined value of those remaining holdings plunged by $171.2 million, or 88%, since they were initially disclosed.

Tesla reveals Cybertruck, but breaks its ‘unbreakable’ windows during unveiling (Thomas R.)

The most expensive version of the truck, the Tri Motor All-Wheel-Drive, will be able to carry 3,500 pounds, tow up to 14,000 pounds and go from zero to 60 in 2.9 seconds. It will also be able to drive up to 500 miles on a full charge. Base models will have a range of 250 miles.

At Least 14 levees broke in Fukushima Prefecture (newsbuoy)

It is our belief from our ongoing research that the ensuing flooding induced by Typhoon Hagibis is moving significant amounts of radiation from high in the mountains down to cities, towns, and farmland in Japan. Our analysis on several radiation sampling trips to the prefecture proves that there are huge amounts of residual radiation that were previously trapped in the soil.
