Do you pay property taxes? Do you rent? In either case you've been ripped off by local taxing authorities who have been running a widespread but illegal operation that has systematically overvalued properties for the purpose of fraudulently collecting higher taxes. Their motivation? Their paychecks, presumably, but that's just a guess. It could be more than that.
